Dear Parents

I have just received a copy of the video taken at my son’s recent weeding. The first part of the video records the children’s beautiful singing of the hymn “For the beauty of the Earth”. I wondered if any of you might like to see it, especially those who were unable to come to the wedding to see their child perform.

I will show the video on the large screen in the KS2 classroom straight after school tomorrow afternoon, 20th July. I would then be happy to flick through any photos of the children’s many activities on my laptop taken over the past years you would like to see. You could stay for as few or as many of these as you wish. Children are welcome to come along too. Tea, coffee, juice and biscuits will be served.

Kind regards,

Margaret Taylor

Dear Parents

Weren’t we lucky with the weather for our visit to Harewood? It really was a wonderful trip and the children were a credit to you all.

Next week we are having a Pet Week in school. The focus of this activity is to develop the speaking and listening skills of the children. Children may prepare a short talk about their pet and they may either bring in pictures or the actual pet for the group to see. Other children will then have the opportunity to ask the child questions.

From Monday to Thursday of next week, there will be sessions at the start and just before the end of the school day to enable parents to bring their pets into school. Monday and Wednesday are dog/small animal days, Tuesday is a cat/small animal day and Thursday is cat/large animal day.

If you could like your child to take part, please complete the slip below. We will of course inform you as to when to bring in your pet if that is possible.

All children will need to bring a packed lunch to school next Friday, the last day of term, and as it is non-uniform day, they may like to dress up for the Garden Party in the afternoon!

Many thanks,

Margaret Taylor

Dear Parents

Your child’s Annual Report is attached. Please let us know if there is anything within it that you don’t understand. We would be happy to explain.

The KS2 children will be making their final visit of this term to Upper Wharfedale School for Sport tomorrow, so will need their Sports kit. For our visit to Harewood House on Wednesday, please ensure that your child is at School by 8.50am, so that we can depart promptly at 9am. Please also ensure that he/she is dressed for a day outdoors and brings a raincoat or sun-cream, depending on the forecast! (Hope it’s the sun-cream!). As the children will need to carry their belongings with them during the day, they will need a backpack/ rucksack. They will also need a packed lunch with still drinks, and a carrier bag to sit on for our picnic.

The final after-school Sports Club will be this Thursday, 15th July, 3.30-4.30pm.

You and your friends and family are warmly invited to join us for our Leavers’ Assembly and Summer Concert at 2.15pm on Friday 16th July in the Village Hall.

Dear Parent

We would like to invite your child to a special Leavers’ Boat Race and Dinner on Wednesday, 7th July.

Mrs Hirst, Mr Baines and I will provide the children with a snack and drink at 3.30pm, and then we will help them to each make a model boat, using wood, cardboard, polystyrene, fabric, etc. They may have time to decorate the boat before we leave at approximately 4:45pm to travel to Linton in staff cars. The children will then ‘race’ their boats along the stream between the bridges at Linton and certificates will be awarded for the most stable, the best-looking and fastest boats.

We have a table booked at the Fountaine at Linton for dinner with the children at 5:15pm. The children should be ready to be collected from Linton at 6:00pm. If you would like your child to take part, please complete the slip below.

Dear Parents

Thank you so much for your help in allowing your child(ren) to take part in Lucy and Richard’s wedding on Saturday.

I cannot begin to tell you how much it meant to me to have them there and so beautifully involved in the service. Every guest at the wedding spoke to me personally afterwards to say how wonderfully they sang. Not only this, but everyone remarked on how beautifully they behaved throughout.

I’m sure you felt as proud as I did. They were an absolute credit to you. I thought you might like a copy of this lovely picture which was taken after the ceremony. My daughter-in-law also took a video of the beginning of the ceremony and the children’s first song. As soon as I receive the DVD from her we will have a viewing session one afternoon, for those of you who weren’t able to be there, or who would like to see it again!

Thank you once again,

I have therefore arranged for the Nurse to come and show the video to any parents who wish to see it at 3.30pm on Thursday 27th May (it is only 8 minutes long).

Please could you give me a ring if you are interested in seeing this video so that I can make the necessary arrangements.

Dear Parents

I am sorry to have to report that Mr Baines continues to be quite unwell, and we are all missing him, but he has today visited the school and hopes to be back with us on Monday 17th May, which we are all extremely glad about. As you probably know, Mrs Byrne has stepped in to deliver KS2 Literacy and our old friend Mr Green has been taking up Y5/6 Science. We are all working very hard to ensure that the work of the School continues to flow along as smoothly as possible.

Looking ahead, a multitude of events and activities are being arranged to make the last months of the School year exciting and interesting for the children. I thought it might be useful to send you a Diary of events so far arranged. These are printed on the reverse of this letter. I am sure that more will be added as time progresses and we will of course inform you of those when we can.

I would particularly like to mention that a special whole-school outing to Harewood House and Bird Garden has been arranged for Wednesday 14th July. The children will have the opportunity to explore the House itself, as well as the Bird Garden and grounds – not forgetting the wonderful Adventure Playground, which I gather is something really special. The Friends have very kindly agreed to fund transport to and from this event.

Governor Update
I thought you would appreciate an update on the appointment of our new Headteacher.
As you know, the Governor Selection panel was pleased to announce that Andrea Walker has been appointed to start in September.
With regard to the remaining weeks of this term, the Governors have arranged a programme for Andrea to meet the Governors, Margaret and the staff, and to be involved in any key decisions that are taken between now and the end of term that may affect next September. We are also planning an event in early September as an opportunity for parents to meet her. Prior to that, you may see her in school during one of her visits this term.
In the meantime, as you may know, Paul Baines has been off school because he has been unwell. We are hopeful that Paul is starting to feel better and that he will return to school shortly. Temporary supply teaching cover has been in place. I know you will join myself and the staff in wishing that Paul is well and back in School soon.
I trust this brief update is of use to you.

30.4.10

Dear Parents

As we are fast approaching the annual test period in KS2, I am writing to clarify arrangements.

The main test week begins Monday 10th May. The children in Y6 will be doing Statutory Assessment Tests (SATs) in English and Mathematics. They have the Reading comprehension test on Monday, the Writing and Spelling tests on Tuesday, the Mental Maths and Maths written paper without calculator on Wednesday and the Maths written paper using a calculator on Thursday. There is no formal test for Science this year.

You may have heard in the media that the tests could be disrupted by industrial action this year. The headteachers of the Cluster took the decision to go ahead with the tests as normal. The tests go away to be externally marked and we receive the results by 6th July 2010.

The children in Years 4 and 5 will be completing Verbal and Non-verbal familiarisation tests on the Monday and Tuesday of Test week. Years 3,4 and 5 will then complete their Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) Optional Tests, with the Reading comprehension test on Wednesday and the Writing longer task on Thursday.

We will have a break from Tests on Friday, and will then continue with the Y3,4,5 Writing shorter task, Spelling and Maths Paper A on Monday 25th May, Maths Paper B on Tuesday and Mental Maths on Wednesday.

You will be informed about your Y3,4 and 5 child(ren)’s performance in the Tests informally via your child when the Tests have been marked, and formally via your child’s Annual Report. If you have any questions regarding the Tests or wish to discuss your child’s test result, please let us know and we will gladly help.

We will endeavour to make the test period as stress-free as possible
and relaxing activities will be organised for the afternoons each day. It is particularly important, however, during the Test period that the children arrive at School on time and well rested, so that they are able to perform to their full potential. We would be very grateful for your support in this.

Many thanks and kind regards,

Y6 Crucial Crew Event –Thursday 29th April 2010

The Year 6 children will be joining others in the Cluster to attend the Crucial Crew Event at the Play Away Centre, Eshton Grange, Gargrave. During the day the children take part in a number of scenarios which will help to prepare them for some of the dangers of teenage life, in a very practical and interactive way.

Children will need to bring a healthy packed lunch and a still drink. There are prizes for the healthiest packed lunches brought to the event. The organisers of this event have requested that the children take either pumps or clean training shoes to change into. School uniform please.

The children will not be travelling by coach from Grassington this year, as it is impractical (and costly) for the children to travel to Grassington and then back through Cracoe to Gargrave. Instead we would ask parents if they can organise transport for the children. The event starts at Eshton Grange at 9.30am prompt and finishes at 2.45pm.

We would like to ask for a contribution of £2.50 for the entrance fee. If you wish your child to attend please complete the attached slip and return to school no later than Wednesday 21st April.

We are all looking forward to our special Easter Party on Thursday. All contributions of food for the party should be brought to the Village Hall Kitchen on Thursday morning. A big Thank You to the parents who have kindly offered to help with lunch. Thursday is a free non-uniform day.

Just a reminder that School closes at 3pm on Thursday and reopens 9am Monday 19th April.

Weekly Sportshall Athletics sessions for the Cluster Y3s and Y4s start the first day back, 19th April, from 4-5pm, until 24th May at Upper Wharfedale School. Parents need to organise their own transport to and from this event.

A very Happy Easter to you all.

Kind regards,

8.3.10

Dear Parents

We are disappointed to see that the number of children taking packed lunches is beginning to rise. The quality of school lunches continues to improve and the children are provided with appetising, healthy and nutritionally balanced meals.

We have always found that sharing a meal together has many positive spin-offs, not only socially but also in terms of introducing children to foods they have not tried before, in a supportive and relaxed environment.

We would therefore ask parents to give careful consideration to these points and if they still feel that they wish their child(ren) to bring a packed lunch that they ensure that they provide a healthy meal, replacing crisps and chocolate biscuits with fresh fruit and vegetables.

Many thanks and kind regards,

Y3 – Kite Making Workshop – Tuesday 23rd March

The Y3 children have been invited to a Cluster workshop in Burnsall Village Hall on Tuesday 23rd March. They will be making their own kites during the morning session and will then have the opportunity to fly them in the car park field.

The workshop begins at 9am so children will need to be at school for 8:45am. If you are able to help transporting the children to Burnsall please indicate so on the consent slip below. May I remind you that if your child needs a booster seat this must be brought into school in the morning of the workshop.

We would ask on this occasion for a contribution of £2.50 per child towards the cost of the workshop. If you would like your child to take part in this workshop, please complete the slip below.

Many thanks.

Dear Parents

A little while ago the Upper Wharfedale Extended Schools co-ordinator Julie Firth wrote to you regarding the new Out of School Club, which is now up and running. The Club runs 5 days a week and is held at Upper Wharfedale School Youth Wing 4 days a week and at Grassington Children’s Centre on Wednesdays, from 3.30-6pm. Transport is provided from Cracoe to the venue. The cost is £10 for the first child with discount for siblings, including transport and a healthy snack.

So far the uptake for this new provision has been a little disappointing. I would encourage you to make use of it to ensure its long-term sustainability. If you are interested please ring Julie on 752885.

May I also draw your attention to the fact that a new year of our 100 Club has begun. There are quarterly draws with prizes of £50, £25 and £10 and this is an excellent fundraiser for the School. If you would like to join, please ring Karen Davies on 730109 or Carolyn Fortune on 730266.

Finally, well done to everyone who helped raise a magnificent £592 in the last Bags 2 School collection. The next collection is Tuesday 4th May.

Kind regards,

Margaret Taylor

PS. Please ensure your child brings his/her letter wallet to school on a daily basis.

If you would like to pop into school and see what’s happening on that day we will be happy to see you. Robert will work with Key Stage 2 children in the morning and Key Stage 1 children in the afternoon.

We also have some book tokens for the children which we hope they will all be able to use.

To KS1 & KS2 Parents

Dear Parents

The annual Cluster Cross Country Run will be held on Wednesday 24th February at Daggetts Field in Burnsall, from 4pm-5:15pm. Parents will need to arrange their own transport to and from this event. I wonder if any parents would be willing to run an after-school cross-country training session on Monday 22nd February, 3:30-4:15, as you have been kind enough to do in the past, to help prepare the children for the run?

If you are able to help out, please let me know as soon as possible.

Many thanks
